Often in the fast paced environment of a football club we forget our roots and how it all started including the people that worked tirelessly to provide us with what we have today.
This article touches upon the above, 37 years ago on the 27th April club stalwart and former chairman Gurney Titmarsh suddenly passed away. Given the fact that tomorrow is the anniversary of his passing I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to reflect on one of the greats of Swaffham Town Football Club.
Gurney was responsible along with others notably Bob Tuttle and Albert Hudson for creating the modern era of the club, they were heavily involved at the time whilst the club house we use and still enjoy today was being built, something I assume all pedlar's alike are grateful for.
Along being the club chairman, which he adored, Gurney was also chair for the local hospital cup which is a local club competition which raises vital funds for the local hospice in Swaffham. Those who have participated in the competition will remember the charitable spirit behind the cup which contributes to the running of essential services in the local community.
To this day as a committee we should still follow Gurney's values and think about putting the football club and its values first. Two stand out examples of people that live and breathe Gurney's values at the club are Albert Hudson and Titty, Gurneys son. To this very day both of them give their all to the club and no matter what decision they make its always with the clubs interest at heart and this is something which every person representing the club should follow indefinitely. Albert and Titty are two cracking examples of people that live and breathe these values and no doubt Gurney would be extremely proud of their efforts.
There are three up and coming events that have a link to Gurney being the Sponsors evening, the final important game of the under 18's season and our presentation evening. During your sponsors evening you'll get chance to enjoy refreshments in the committee room fittingly named after Gurney and on presentation evening the players player of the year award named the Gurney Titmarsh Trophy will be handed to one lucky individual.Tomorrow evening the U18's host their title deciding game down the lane on the anniversary of Gurney's passing; on behalf of the club I wish the boys luck, bring it home and lets give Gurney something else to be proud of!
Kind regards,
Swaffham Town Football Club
