Swaffham continued their winning run, beating the fancied Braintree Town Reserves team in a very competitive and entertaining match. The visitors should have taken the lead in the third minute, a whipped in cross met four yards out on the far post by the head of the Braintree number seven. It seemed more difficult to miss the target than score but he managed it, to the relief of the home crowd ! The warning heeded, the Pedlars settled and played the tidy, measured football they have demonstrated this season. Joe Jackson breaking the deadlock in the tenth minute, placed through and beating the visiting keeper to his left. A real shock for Braintree when Alex Vincent made it two in the twentieth minute. Picking up from Jackson's assist and beating one defender to shoot. A lifeline for Braintree three minutes later, a soft penalty awarded, keeper Scott Cruikshank having no chance following his recent penalty form. Two minutes before half-time, the margin was restored, Rory Harper thumping the ball home.
The second half was a fine display of football by both sides despite no further goals, three great opportunities for Swaffham, Jackson hitting the post and Vincent making Haxell the visiting keeper pull off two great saves. Solid defending by the Pedlars back four protected the lead and the shape and awareness of the midfield kept the opposition at bay. The only grey cloud on the afternoon, with three minutes to go, Vincent put through by Will O'Brien, clashed with the keeper in a 50/50 challenge. Vincent was briefly unconcious and great work by Swaffham physio Graham Moore, ensured that he was kept comfortable and safe until paramedics and an ambulance arrived to take Alex to hospital. After an hour and ten minutes the match re-started and Swaffham held the score to notch up another three points and lifting them to third in the table.
