Swaffham Town 2 Wellingborough Whitworths 1
Pedlars battle on to next round
A well deserved victory for the Pedlars, managing to maintain their style of football and not get sucked into the hit and run tactics of their opponents. Early pressure by the visitors had attempts safely defended by Dean Miller and Matthew Parkinson, who were solid at the back throughout. Swaffham took the initiative in the 18th minute, a free kick taken by Jack Redhead after he had been brought down. The cross won by Rory Harper and knocked down for Joe Jackson to hit home. Jackson close to a second minutes later, set free by Richard Cornwall, the effort vollied wide. Wellingborough continued to try to draw even but the Town maintained a close back four denying space and freedom. With five minutes to half-time, David Weaver-Pope won a challenge from a Wellingborough free kick, clearing to Will O'Brien, O'Brien beat one to lay a through ball to Alex Vincent. The tackle on him was clumsy and there was a big call for a penalty but it was not given.
The visitors started the second half strongly, winning a corner in the 50th minute. The cross hard and high but confidently taken by keeper Scott Cruikshank, rising above the attacking forwards. The Pedlars continued to calm the game, frustrating Wellingborough by playing out of situations rather than just returning the ball through a 'hoofed' clearance. The gap widened with just seven minutes to go, Jackson put through, beating the offside trap and slotting the ball home through the legs of the keeper. With nothing to loose Wellingborough threw all they had at the Town, Dwayne Hockton returning for his first start since illness denied his counter-part throughout and was solid in the air. Cruikshank forced to make a great save with two minutes of nornal time remaining, Jamie Buhlemann making a tremendous block from the loose ball. It was encouraging to see young blood on the bench for Swaffham, Loui Hockton and Toby Hilliard replacing Vincent and Jackson.
Too little too late, Wellingborough gaining a consulation goal in the second minute of added time, the centre forward latching on to a cross from a free kick, but time crept on to deny an equaliser. The Pedlars look forward to another home tie in the next round, Northamptonshire opposition once again, Desborough Town on Saturday 13 October.
Next Saturday the Pedlars travel to Suffolk to play Long Melford, hoping to restore their Thurlow Nunn form, kick off 3pm.
The Reserves are at home to Hoveton Wherrymen, kick off 2.30pm, the 'A' Team have a revised fixture, now playing Shipdham in the Division
