Paul Hunt's return to the helm at Shoemakers Lane on Saturday, inspired his squad to deposit their first Ridgeons point of the season, against top of the table and undefeated Long Melford. Due to the similarity of the visitors home and away shirts to those of the Pedlars, Town were requested to play in their away, tangerine orange shirts. Winning the toss, they elected to kick downhill, against the wind.
Swaffham applied early pressure and demonstrated some of the close ball work that they have been promising, but never getting enough up field to threaten the Long Melford goal.
The visitors first opportunity came in the 22nd minute, a ball played across the box, missed by all and finally shot wide. Four minutes later, a further chance from a free kick, the Melford number 11 nearly hitting the water tower!
Johnny George combining with Keith Polski in the 35th minute, providing aservice for Joe Jackson to volley, this was parried by the keeper, the header following straight to the keeper's hands. Two minutes later, George in action at the other end, headed clear from a Melford free kick. Swaffham broke away and weaved their way upfield. Joe Jackson set up a shooting opportunity for keith Polski, his shot hitting the post. The half ending with the hosts well on top of their game but unable to find the back of the net.
The second half was less eventful, the visitors sharpened their game, defending tighter and restricting time and space for the Saffham offensive. Richard Cornwall continued his form this season, providing deliveries for Jackson and Polski, but the closest Town came in the half was a well placed free kick by Will O'Brien shaving the cross bar.
