Thetford Town 2 Swaffham Town 1
An enjoyable first league derby encounter this season, saw Thetford take the spoils. Swaffham without leading goal scorer Joe Jackson, Mehdi Mehrpour, Will O'Brien and Nathan Cross through injury, Aaron Clifford through suspension and then loosing Daren Hockton in the pre-match warm-up, had all to play for without even kicking a ball. Thetford started strongly but the Pedlars settled and played the more attractive football in the first half. Neither keeper being particularly tested.
The game turned early in the second half, with Thetford beating the offside trap, the effort hitting the post with the rebound leaving an east tap-in for the no 11. Swaffham rallied and up'd their game, applying consistent pressure to the Thetford defence. The equaliser coming in the 68th minute, a great run by 16year old Jake Platten, laying off to Matthew Parkinson who provided the service for Richard Cornwall to execute a superb volley into the top of the net. Thetford responded, getting the winner in the 74th minute, a good run by the no 9 to mis-hit a cross into the box, only for the ball to land at the no 11's foot for another simple tap in. The final quarter of an hour, saw controversy when it seemed the home keeper had caught the ball, only to carry it over the line, the referee being unsighted, looked to his linesman for help, with non forthcoming, the game played on. The Pedlars threw all they had at Thetford, keeper Dean Mayes making the journey into his opposing box for free kicks on two occasions, but the deserved equaliser was not to be found.
A good footballing local Derby, but no luck for the ''Pedlars'' on this occassion!!!!!
Swaffham will look for revenge and balance the books on the last proposed day of the season when Thetford visit Shoemakers Lane, Easter Monday
