Towns fortunes were halted at Long Melford by 2 defensive errors

Long Melford 2 Swaffham Town 1
The Pedlars brief league run came to a close Saturday, playing the more attractive football in difficult conditions, the Melford defence using tactics both by fair means and foul to thwart Swaffham's style of play. Early on in the 5th minute, Jack Redhead's corner was cleared by the Melford's centres, two headed opportunities from free kicks fell to Daren Hockton, the first narrowly wide, the second calling for a good save by the Melford keeper. Melford getting their first attack in the 25th minute, the corner cleared by James Miller, Swaffham broke forward Aaaron Clifford's attempt passing wide of the post. The same result for Joe Jackson, turning his man well in the 39th minute, his shot skimming the outside of the post. The final moment of the first half, a Redhead free kick cleared for a corner, David Spalding heading the cross, the effort cleared off the line. All square at half time.
Jake Platten started strong in the second half, good work on the wide left to set Jack Redhead free, the keeper saving well. Youngster Platten needing to be replaced by Will O'Brien having picked up a groan injury in the 65th minute. The tide turned in the 70th minute, a mistake by 16 year old Lee Woolmore on his debut, uncharacteristic of his performance for the day, left an easy tap in for the Melford centre forward. Still shocked and with their guard down, Melford came close 2 minutes later, the attempt from a free kick, clipping the top of the bar. Good footwork by Will O'Brien kept the dream alive, his work rate with fresh legs making an impact on the Melford mid field. Medhi Mehrpour, having replaced a tiring Jack Redhead, had to be substituted himself following a crude and poorly timed challenge, the Melford culprit lucky to not to be punished, more severly.
Consulation came in the 89th minute, Daren Hockton striking from 35 yards, the ball sneaking past the keeper to the bottom left hand corner. The saved point was dashed away a minute later, a further defensive mistake latched onto by the Melford number 12, Dean Mayes powerless to stop the shot.
No game next Saturday for the Pedlars, they travel to Fakenham Town Tuesday 1st February (7.45pm k/o) for the first of four local derbys in eleven days.
This Saturday, both the Reserves and 'A' Team are at home, their opponents Aylsham and Great Ryburgh respectively, both kick off at 2pm.
The Under 18's also do not have a league game this week, their planned fixture at Wisbech postponed due to pitch availability. They will look to play a friendly Thursday evening in lieu of the match (7.30pm k/o anticipated).
