Excellent win at the Glassworld

Cambridge University Press 2 Swaffham Town 3

Swaffham ended CUP's recent run of good form with an impressive performance at the Glassworld Stadium. The big pitch providing a canvass for the open play and ground passing football that the Pedlars try to demonstrate and do so well when given the opportunity to do so. They started strong and dominated the middle of the field, but it was the home side who had the first chance, Dean Mayes saving well to his right in the eighteenth minute. A minute later the play swopped to the other end, Joe Jackson set free his chip over the keeper off target and wide of the goal. Jack Redhead, supplied after fine play between Nathan Cross and Luke Fell to push forward on the left wing, thumped a shot from 20 yards, the ball deflected over the bar. Richard Cornwall set up the next opportunity, an inch perfect ball slotted through the CUP defence, Jackson running onto it, but his curling shot beating the keeper but wide of the far post. The break came in the 39th minute, a driven cross from the left side met at the front post by Fell, a straight forward knock in to secure the goal.

Scott Voutt instrumented Fell's second in the 65th minute, a push forward through the middle of the field, a perfectly weighted pass, leaving Fell to slide the ball past the keeper. Press were awarded a bizarre penalty in the 68th minute, closing the gap again, but Jackson repaired the damage in the 73rd minute, beating two and then shooting and netting from 20 yards. Fine defending by Matthew Parkinson, Dwayne Hockton and Captain David Spalding soaked up the pressure applied by CUP, Spalding even making a strong break forward himself, to be finally beaten near the CUP touch line. Press finally broke the defence in the last minute of normal time, a scramble in the box finally drilled home by the CUP number nine. The Pedlars held on throughout the eight or so additional minutes that the referee had found from somewhere, to bring home a well deserved three points.

The Pedlars travel to Mildenhall in the League Knock out Cup on Tuesday, kick off 7.45pm and then return to League competition visiting Debenham L.C. next Saturday 3pm k/o.

Both Reserves and 'A' Team are at home Saturday, Lodden United Reserves and Bridgham United the respective visitors, both games kick off at 2pm.
